The Algarve has natural exciting geology attractions. The inland part, the Serra Algarvia, is in geomorphologic contrast with the littoral. The Serra forms a mountainous barrier comprising mainly sedimentary rocks that, in the western part, extend to the littoral forming dramatic sea cliffs. Standing out in the Serra is the Monchique Massif consisting of igneous rocks that intruded the older rocks of the Serra. South of the Serra is the Algarve Basin comprising essentially carbonate rocks, that superbly form the sea cliffs that are a record of the geological evolution of the Algarve Basin.
